Antique Pendant Locket Micromosaic Cross Patonce 18k Gold Papal Vatican (6918)

Description

Measurements: Weight is 9.2 grams. Diameter is just under 1 inch (2.7cm).

Description : During the 19th century, there was a passion for Revivals of the Classics and other ancient civilisations. Led by Fortunato Pio Castellani, Revival jewelry became the rage.

This locket pendant is round with a micromosaic featuring a Cross Patonce - a cross with equi-length arms and tri-lobed terminals.
The back has a glass-enclosed reserve in which a picture or locket of hair can be placed. 

The pendant shows clear Classic Revival features such as the rope twist and beaded borders and the granulation on the generous bale.

The micromosaic shows the same beautiful attention to fine detail as does the gold work. Contained within concentric gold borders are blue and white tesserae with a central Cross surrounded by patterns and designs that echo the tri-lobed flower-like terminals of the cross. Lovely detail and extremely fine workmanship. Black and deep red tesserae provide background and interest.

Marks and Metal: Papal States / Vatican mark for gold with crossed keys under crown.     

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. I did not find any missing tessera. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
