    Description

This pair of madreñas is in excellent condition.  I'm pretty certain they've never been worn as there are no marks on the soles.  However, one of the  clogs has a crack at the base of one of the raised heels.
    HISTORY:
The madreña [or mother], galocha, or zuécalu (depending on what area you are in) is a type of one-piece wooden shoe, which has a heel and two front pieces on the sole. to keep the feet out of the cold and the mud. They are usually made from the wood of Birch, Chestnut, or Walnut trees.
They are used in the north of the Iberian Peninsula , especially in Asturias and, with different names, in Cantabria , Galicia, León, and the Basque Country. They are used in steep fields & muddy paths as they are waterproof and insulated. They are made so that a person keeps their normal shoes on and slips them into the madreñas.
The design on the front is the makers signature, which is passed down from generation to generation.
